Students of the Dept. of Nursing Science at CNU
Won the Prize in Policy Proposal Competition

Six students of the Dept. of Nursing Science at Chonnam National University (CNU) (Kang Min-kyung, Kim Ga-yeon, Kim Kyung-hwa, Kim Go-un, Kim Min-ji and Kim Seol-ah) received an award at the Legislation and Policy Proposal Competition which was hosted by National Assembly Research Services and Financial News on November 10th.
They suggested the “Working Mom Project” which indicates the problems that the lack of real policies for single mothers. The Working Mom Project was selected as one of the eight prize-winning policies out of 140 pieces of memorandums. The Project pointed out that 24.9% of single mothers are students and more than half of them decided to have an abortion because they believe that cannot afford to raise kids financially and mentally themselves.
Kim Go-un (Senior, Dept. of Nursing Science), one of the award-winning students, said, “For most of Koreans, especially upper classes, it is quite difficult to understand and admit social minorities. They need to change their negative stereotypes and try to dealing with minority groups as a member of the society.”
The Working Mom Project suggests ‘Job Support Policy’ and ‘Bringing up Support Policy’ for single mothers. They think that helping single mothers to be independent financially can make them more easily available to raise their children.
Kim Kyung-hwa (Senior, Dept. of Nursing Science), another award-winning students, said, “Single mothers in Korea have a difficulty in getting a job and have to struggle against many kinds of prejudices make lawmakers hard to legislate for lower classes. Korean society needs a more acceptable atmosphere so that single mothers are neither discriminated against nor looked down on”.
