Korean Buddies at the orientation program for International Summer Session
CNU operates the 2010 International Summer Session from June 21st to July 14th and 14 international students participate in the session. The Office of International Affairs (OIA) also provides a Buddy program to help international students adapt to new surroundings at CNU and understand Korean culture. The OIA selected 15 local students as Korean buddies prior to the start of the session and held orientations twice on June 15th and 18th. This orientation was designed to introduce Korean culture and allow Korean students to befriend the foreign exchange students who came to participate in the International Summer Session. Kim Sye-jeong, a staff of the OIA said, “The main purpose of this program is to provide the opportunity for both international and CNU students to build friendship through cooperative interaction. This also promotes interactive international exchange between international students around the world.” This program started on June 21st, and 14 international students will be supported in their daily life until July 15th by CNU students participating in the buddy program. The second buddy program for the 2010 International Summer Session will start on August 11th.

CNU Promotes Exchange Programs with Europe

By Kim Sun-woo, Cub-Reporter

On May 27th, there was a special meeting to enhance exchange programs with universities in Europe at the Office of International Affairs (OIA) of Chonnam National University (CNU).  During the meeting, participants including Shin Gyung-gu, Vice President of the OIA and four professors exchanged ideas on how to promote interchange activity between European universities and CNU. They also discussed CNU’s development of effective and sustainable programs to enhance personal exchanges and relations between European universities and CNU. However,  most European universities are reluctant to initiate exchange programs with foreign universities and even when they do  CNU has difficulty in accomplishing good results with those programs. The participants of the meeting agreed it was necessary that CNU initiates exchange programs with European universities. Jo Young-lan, the staff of the OIA said, “CNU makes efforts to operate exchange programs with European universities, but it is actually very hard. Even so, CNUians need to have a more progressive attitude toward studying at foreign universities, challenging themselves and broadening their horizons.”
