You can see a variety of posters to attract attention to campus clubs early each semester. It may the first opportunity for freshmen to pursue their interests and often, they feel like joining some of them. During their university days, they have to study hard and also need to have a variety of experiences through campus club activities to better their future. The club activities provide learning opportunities for today’s youth. Chonnam Tribune would like to introduce four clubs that are very notable. Let’s listen to each club’s story about its foundations and activities.

Traveling by Bicycle,  Yellow Bike

▲ Yellow Bike members are riding bicycles in a line
When you take a trip, you might use traditional transportation like cars or trains. In the case of choosing one of them, you could get to the destination easily and early but you would lose a chance to be able to feel the refreshing air and to see picturesque scenery beside you. Yellow Bike provides you with the opportunity to enjoy the beauty of nature at a slower pace. The club was established in 1997. Though it has a short history, we are sure that all of us have stronger affection toward each other than other clubs which have a longer history.

Our club’s name “Yellow Bike” means “Let’s preserve purity and brightness like a child while riding a bicycle.” Major activities of our club include traveling by bicycle on weekends and during summer vacation. As a regular event, we take day trips around the suburbs of Gwangju every weekend. We have weekly meetings in the club room every Tuesday and discuss the place where we want to go on a day trip on the upcoming Saturday. We also have a five or six day-long bicycle trip during summer vacation.

If you join our club, you will freely enjoy dynamic and wonderful campus life. Our club has no strict regulations which would make you feel so tight. You can also improve your problem solving ability enough to cope with urgent and unexpected situations in person through club activities like extreme cycling. Please do not hesitate to join us.

Charm of Performing Arts,  Chondae Dram Club

Our club, “Chondae Drama Club” formed in 1965. It is just one of many campus clubs having a long history. In the past when the student movement for democracy was powerful, our activities had been quite political. However, we have changed a great deal and have a successful prize-winning career. We twice won the National University Theater Festival and participated in the 1st Theater Festival of Universities in Gwangju as the representative of CNU in December of last year.

Our club usually produces two plays every year to offer an environment in which CNU students can experience theatrical circumstances. We complete the whole process of developing a play plan, practicing, setting the stage and performing by ourselves. Through such activities all the members can obtain skills required to present a play, such as acting, directing, stage design and stage lighting. It is true that our club activities are very difficult, but we are proud of ourselves whenever we present a play successfully.

We wish that more students would join our club and share the affection for performing arts with us. CDC is open to any CNU student. Our next performace on stage will be held in March. Why not see our next play? We are sure that you will get valuable experience.

Pleasure of Volunteer Service,  Sin Haeng

▲ Sin Haeng members are volunteering for the old in the Bethel Nursing Home
The student volunteer service club, “Sin Haeng” was established in 1979 to serve the local community. Our club’s name, “Sin Haeng,” means “Just do it as your faith.” Our major activities are to visit Gwangju Bethel Nursing Home and Gwangju Sekwang School and do volunteer service once a week. At Bethel Nursing Home, we help old people take a bath and clean the nursing home. Sometimes on a clear and lovely day, club members go on a picnic with them. The picnic is called the “Turtle Picnic.” At Sekwang School which is a school for physically challenged children, we have performances for them.

All the members like the very friendly and pleasant atmosphere of our club. It is true that doing volunteer services every week is very difficult for us, but the activity provides learning opportunities and experiences to make us know the true meanings of love and happiness. We always feel a sense of happiness while doing such activities.
You may think volunteer work takes a lot of time, but just a little time and effort are needed for you to be a big help to others in need. Remember that there are many people who need your small help. Visit us and seize a chance to take pleasure in doing public service during your university days.

Beauty of Stars,
 Byulddaogi

▲ Byulddaogi member making astronomical observations
Our club started in November, 1992 by a passion for the stars. At that time Lee Jeong-hoon, a founder of Byulddaogi (official name is CNU Amateur Astronomical Club), wanted to organize an amateur astronomical club with those who would be interested in stars. He began to find out students names on the lending record paper attached in the back of astronomical books at CNU library. They met and went to the Dam-yang Seong-am campsite to set up an astronomical observation in next day. This is Byulddaogi’s foundation story.

Our club has offered chances for local residents to let them know about stars with our telescopes at local festivals. We have had exchanges with other amateur astronomical clubs. Our club is taking full charge of all the information related to astronomy. On clear days, club members go to suburban regions for regular astronomical observations. We see shooting stars and various constellations on these excursions. Before joining Byulddaogi, most club members had only a simple curiosity for the stars. However, club activities such as studying the stars and doing astronomical observations make us be able to feel the beauty of stars and astronomy.

The contemporary city is filled with a variety of electric lights. At night, we hardly look at the stars in the sky. How about enjoying the beauty of stars with us? The stars are waiting for you.

It is important for students to have various experiences and opportunities during their university days. You can improve your ability and discover your potential talents through club activities. It is time to consider joining a particular campus club and enjoying your campus life.
