<#275 Howdy, CNU-ians?>

Hello, everyone!

Whenever a new semester starts, most students make plans to study hard to achieve their goals for the future. How about you? Today, thanks to various educational facilities such as public schools and small private institutions, we have a wider variety of opportunities to become educated in many fields of knowledge.

However, there are still many people who have not received formal school education and feel the thirst for learning.

Heemang Yahak (HY) is for these people. The HY is a night school in which they can learn and study. Now, Heemang-ians are starting to talk. Let's listen to their stories and reflect about "teaching and learning” at the beginning of this new term.

Im Hyo-sang, Sophomore, Dept. of Electronic Computer Engineering

Our club started in 1968 to provide educational opportunities for people who were too poor to be educated at a school. In the past, the HY had a political tendency as part of the Student Movement, but it has changed.

Now the HY is a school which operates many educational programs by volunteer students from three universities-Chosun University, Kwangju Women's University, and Gwangju National University of Education. The main office of the HY is in Gye-rim dong, Donggu, Gwangju Metropolitan City. 30 undergraduates currently run six classes.

Jang Yu-mi, Junior, Dept. of Society Education

Through our club activities, anyone who wants to be a teacher can make his/her dream come true. In the HY, we actually teach older people and the young who leave school without finishing a complete course. The HY age range is so varied that we have to cover all subjects from elementary to middle and high school.

At the same time, we can also learn about life and love. The HY is well run like a real school. Twice every week, we have a meeting with members of other universities and hold a faculty conference for running the HY. The teachers of each class make interesting programs for students such as going on picnics, holding festivals and so on.

As we don’t receive financial support, the HY’s students have to pay school fees, about 18,000 won per a month. So some people gave up studying because they couldn't afford it. It was so heartbreaking. I hope such never happen again. If there was national or local government financial support for the HY, we could offer tuition-free classes to students.

Sung Jung-A, Junior, Dept. of Applied Biology

We held a “Winter Festival” last January, in which we gave many performances and exhibitions and it was so good. Many volunteer students had redoubled their efforts to prepare the festival by working and practicing hard. At certain times like the festival we occasionally invite some celebrities and enjoy ourselves together with them.

We also have many memorable students such as a Vietnamese woman studying the Korean language and an old woman bringing her grandson with her. Sometimes, old women bring some fruit or food for us. It makes me feel so good that the HY’s students are delighted with the outcome of our activities. I think we have received the rewards for our efforts.

Song Hyun-jin, Sophomore, Dept. of Economics

I hope that many freshmen join our club at the beginning of a new semester. As many freshmen actually don't know about the HY, we mostly select the teachers for the Yahak from applicants by sophomores and juniors. As a result, the term of the HY’s faculty is not enough to provide proper education.

For that reason, we hope that many freshmen become interested.  The HY is open to any CNU student. After passing a simple test, you can be a teacher and get a lot of experiences at theYahak. Share your love with the Heemang Yahak's students.
