The 54th Chonnam National University General Student Council (GSC) election will take place online on Nov. 26. As of Nov. 11, the Central Election Commission (CEC) has confirmed the GSC’s presidential and vice presidential candidates: Kim Eui-jong (Senior, Faculty of Economics) and Jeong Da-eun (Junior, Dept. of Korean Language Education) form Team No. 1, while Shin Seung-hwan (Senior, School of Polymer Science and Engineering) and Jin Yeong-chae (Senior, Dept. of Wood Science & Engineering) represent Team 2. Each candidate’s campaign headquarters has its own name: “Doyak” (jump) for Team 1 and “Gieok” (remember) for Team 2. Team “Doyak” expressed their intentions to the Tribune, “We will make CNU grow alongside our students and expand our student community.” Meanwhile, Team “Gieok” declared “We will implement positive changes for students to create a CNU that everyone can be proud of.”
CEC Chairman Yoo Sung-min (Senior, Dept. of Physics Education) said, “An election is a way to select legitimate representatives of our society. I will uphold electoral values while strictly adhering to democratic principles.” He also mentioned that this is the first competitive election since 2021, and, as such, will require concerted efforts to establish a fair and healthy playing field.
To ensure fair competition, the symbols for teams 1 and 2, as well as designated outdoor publicity zones, were determined through a lottery after registration closed on Nov. 11. In addition, there will be two primary debates and three joint campaign events. The first primary debate was scheduled for Nov. 15, and the second primary debate will take place on Nov. 21. Two more campaign events are planned for Nov. 19 and Nov. 21.
