CNU students, faculty, staff and alumni marked the 44th anniversary of the May 18 Democratization Movement on May 16 by visiting the May 18 National Cemetery and hosing a commemorative ceremony at Yongbong Hall. Members of the university community paid tribute to the victims and martyrs of the movement. At the end of the ceremony, co-organized by the CNU May 18 Institute and the CNU Alumni Association for Democracy, Faculty Council Chairperson Kim Jae-kwan read the declaration “To All the Intellectuals in the Republic of Korea” issued by CNU professors on May 14, 1980, and General Student Council President Lee Hong-gyu recited the “Junior Pledges to Mark the 44th Anniversary of the May 18 Democratization Movement.” The event ended with all attendees joining in to sing “March for the Beloved” and “Burning Thirst,” which are widely known as songs commemorating they May 18 and democracy itself.
