GSC’s Candidates Making Pledges for CNU Students’ Sake

Heading to the 54th Chonnam National University General Student Council (GSC) election on Nov. 26, two couples of candidates are hurriedly executing their campaigns to capture students’ attention and accumulate support and voting. The GSC’s presidential and vice-presidential candidates are confirmed: Team No.1 “Doyak” (Jump) with Kim Eui-jong (Senior, Faculty of Economics) and Jeong Da-eun (Junior, Dept. of Korean Language Education), and Team No.2 “Gieok” (Remember) including Shin Seung-hwan (Senior, School of Polymer Science and Engineering) and Jin Yeong-chae (Senior, Dept. of Wood Science & Engineering). The Chonnam Tribune highlights each candidate’s commitments for the next presidential term to promote easy comprehension and explanations.  

The two candidates show some key similarities in their plans: 
1. Student ID design, which raises concerns about the exposure of personal data, is promised to have improvements in personal information protection and clear CNU identity. 
2. The student council’s budget usage will be more transparent through monthly reports, allowing students to conveniently access and strengthening trust in financial operations. 
3. There will be more student parking permits with the aim of meeting the students’ needs in using their mobile vehicles. 

Belows are noticeable differences with respect to each candidate’ commitments: 
Candidate No.1 – Team Doyak (Jump) 
1. CNU Academic Week: Enhancing interest in academics and creating a place for academic communications via Golden Bells, academic competitions, senior guest lectures, etc. for CNU students. 
2. CNU Sports Day: Fostering the sports culture by collaborating with various sports organizations in Gwangju to organize group visits and sports talent programs. 
3. May 18 Democratization Movement Commemorative Project: Aligning with social and historical values in the region by commemorating May 18. 
4. School Power Charging Bank: Installing the auxiliary battery rental service on campus, especially in high-traffic and class-intensive areas, to ensure accessibility. 
5. On-campus Testing Centre: Making a test center for TOEIC, KBS Korean Language Proficiency Test, IPAT, etc. so that CNU students can enjoy a familiar testing environment. 

Candidate No.2 – Team Gieok (Remember) 
1. Student Council Constitution: Besides the Revision Committee in March, Student Council Constitution will be promoted to gather student’s opinions, fostering a consensus for meaningful amendments.
2. Field Training Opportunities by Specialization: In collaboration with the Career Development Office to increase internship opportunities and develop tailored programs based on the academic year. 
3. Innovation in Dormitory Life: Abolishment of laundry cards, adjustment of curfew hours and extension during exam periods, roommate matching system, etc. 
4. 10-10-10 Long Weekends: Negotiating for a 10-day continuous holiday, giving students a chance to recharge and focus on studying. 
5. Regular Briefings about GSC: Conveying monthly short-form videos, each about one minute long, to effectively share the Student Council’s ongoing projects and future plans with students.
